Additional Information About The Walk to Emmaus
A Ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church, sponsors the Walk to Emmaus and offers it through local Emmaus groups around the world. Although connected through The Upper Room to The United Methodist Church, The Walk to Emmaus is ecumenical.
Some may have seen literature about it at District or Conference functions or seen an article in the RELAY and wondered what this is all about. Is it an exercise program with lots of walking, or a retreat that involves walking? The answer is none of the above. It has nothing to do with walking at all. What it has to do with is an image taken from the Bible, from the story in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 24:13-33 (paraphrased) where, on the morning of resurrection, two of Jesus’ disciples are walking from Jerusalem to their village called EMMAUS. As they are walking, they encounter the risen Christ – but they do not know him until he breaks bread with them: as it says, “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him” (Luke 24:30-31). It is this beautiful image of encountering Jesus on the walk, on the journey, seeing him with new eyes, experiencing his presence all over again that is represented in the name WALK TO EMMAUS.
